aka Summer Solstice, is this weekend. the shortest night of the year. Summer…. just the word sounds fun. i remember my summers being boring, having to go to a babysitter because my mother worked, my little brother bugging me all the time. i read alot of books. took summer classes in middle school. went to the playground when i was smaller. YMCA daycamp. Girl scout camp.
But what i miss now is summer with my children. i have said it before, but i miss the days of library craft time, library reading group, getting a mound of books and coming home and reading in the hot sultry afternoons. Or swimming at the pool. Or lessons for swimming or ballet or gymnastics at the Y. Summer was about sports camps – soccer or baseball or basketball. and we always went to the local hardware, Home Hardware, and got a refrigerator box and a washing machine box because there was always one full week of rain and when that happened we used magic duct tape to build a castle in the living room. the kids would paint it, cut windows and doors and we would eat in there, read in there, nap in there. and we would also build an Attic Tent. I would take the clothesline and string it across the attic one end to the other and then we would hang old sheets and light blankets and have a huge tent.
so much fun. i am hopeful they remember these things as fondly as i do. i really miss summer with the children.
