She would have been 101 today. born in 1919, survived the depression as a child, her parents tried to sell her and her brother James. went into foster care. pregnant at 15, got married, had my father. her husband was a butcher. then had a second child. and then realized she was married to an alcoholic and an unfaithful spouse. she waited, but could wait no more. at that time period and in Kansas City she was not allowed to keep her second child, so she gave him up to her husband and his mother. her older son stayed with her.
She ended up back in Ohio. remarried. divorced again. and stayed single. she got a job at a bank. started as a teller and moved her way up. she was smart with numbers and money. when she retired they replaced her with two people. and she didn’t have a college education.
she sewed and knitted and crocheted and cooked and baked and read books voraciously. and watched old movies all the time.
and she was my grandmother. Lauretta. my gram. and my heart misses her so very very much. how can i describe how she made me, molded me, loved me. more than anyone in my life growing up, she was there.
i sew because of her. i bake because of her. i crochet because of her. i garden because of her. i raise violets because of her. so much of me, more than my DNA, is her.
we cannot pick our families. we are born into families of dysfunction because of the fallen world we live in. but i hit the jackpot of blessings with my gram. Thank you Jesus, thank you.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my Gram in Heaven!!!!!
